re: The Halla and his Keeper (Recruitment)

It was that time of day where the land had grown quiet. The sun had just barely set and the first stars were appearing in the sky. The beasts of the day had laid down to sleep, while the predators of the dark had not yet stirred. It should have been a peaceful night; The sky was clear and soon the stars would shine in all their glory. Yet the air was too still, and more than just the sky was turning black.

Quiet hooves continued their journey along the hills bordering the Brecilian Forest. It was all the grand Halla could do not to sink his feet too deeply into mud still damp from an earlier shower. The rain had, at the least, seemed to have thrown off their pursuers. Of course, this was assuming the tainted beings that had chased him and his Elven friend out of the Wilds hunted as beasts would. The Halla truly had no way of knowing - only instincts that told him to keep walking. He couldn't tire yet. Not while the elf he carried needed to make use of the forest's untainted gifts.

A cry from the elf in question caused her charge to jump and bleat in surprise. This, of course, did not make matters any better, but Veris dared not snap at her only companion. Instead, the Dalish hunter reached out with her good hand to stroke the beast's neck.

"Shh, lethallin. Shh." She whispered, her tone strained. Her right arm hung limply at her side, wounded by a nasty-looking arrow that still stuck out of her shoulder. Whether the arrow had been from a startled Shemlen or one of those tainted monsters, she could not recall. The escape had been such a blur, after all. Still, she knew she could not leave it there much longer. She needed to tend to it, but she had no salves. Making one was out of the question - she didn't know how. All she could do was pray that Ghilan'nain was guiding her beloved 'steed' in the right direction.

The earlier rain had rinsed much of the blood from Veris' form, though both her and her Halla were now covered in mud. She was not sure which was worse. Though the blood had been unsightly and unpleasant, the mud could easily infect her wound and worsen the situation. She ultimately decided the debate was pointless - either way, the situation wasn't all that great. Still, her Halla had never let her down before. He trusted her to tend to his needs, she would have to trust him to tend to hers. He did seem to know where he was going, as well, which was at least somewhat comforting.

The creature had stopped and turned his head to look at her, concern in his eyes as he bleated at her again. The way Veris had slumped on his back was not reassuring in the least. It was enough to make him ignore the rope she had been so cruel as to tie around his horns back in the Wilds. It draped down his neck loosely to where it had been tied to her belt - an annoyance at the least, but one he had to disregard while she was exhausted and in pain.

"Emma falon, ma falon..." She murmured as she settled her head against his neck again. "Keep going."

There was a moment of silence before the Halla did as told. He kept moving. He had been walking for what felt like days, his steps were becoming shaky, but he had to keep moving. Though he knew not where he was heading, he listened to his instincts and kept walking. If his instincts took him somewhere where his tender could be tended to, he would continue walking for weeks.

Desten sucked in a full breath of crisp air from the forest as he walked, peacefully striding through the forest. Most of his life had been spent hiding in the woods as an apostate mage, and any forest made him feel at home. Even though he never really tried to study nature magic, he knew enough about his surroundings to keep himself a live. His hood hung heavily on his head, still damp from the rain, though he barely noticed it at all.

He looked around to see what wildlife was out and about, though more with curiosity than with caution. He knew full well that he can handle whatever tried to descend upon him, so for him this was just a nice walk. That is, until he spotted a halla in the distance. He simply stopped, and waited to see what it did once it noticed him.

The Halla failed to notice Desten's presence until he detected the man's scent on the wind. He immediately froze, bracing his shaky legs in the mud as he glanced about to spy the stranger. It wasn't difficult once the creature knew Desten was there. He let out a distressed bleat and backed away a couple of steps.

Veris, by this point, knew something was very wrong. Bracing her good arm against the back of her Halla's neck, she pushed herself upright enough to try and see what the problem was. At the sight of a shemlen - in of all the places, here - she inhaled sharply. Here she was, wounded and exhausted - how could she protect her Halla from a shemlen now?!

"Back away!" She shouted at him, her voice shaky with pain and fear. "Leave us, shemlen, and we'll do you no harm!" It was clear she couldn't follow up on that threat even if she wanted to. Not with the countless bruises, scrapes, and cuts she had earned in their escape from the wilds. The arrow in her shoulder was a bother, too.

Desten simply raised his hands a bit as he edged closer towards them, trying to show he meant no trouble. "I don't think you could do me harm even if you tried...considering that arrow sticking out of you." He continued to press forward, but he did so slowly, trying not to spook either the halla or it's handler. "Why don't we just relax, and we can try reintroducing ourselves, okay?"

The Halla took a step back, watching the man cautiously. He knew he was too exhausted to run as he had in the Wilds, which meant if this shemlen intended to kill them, they were doomed. Yet something told him they were in no danger. Something that he doubted his Elf could sense. After a long, tense moment, the grand beast bowed his head to the stranger.

Veris sputtered in alarm. "What are you doing?!" She questioned. "Run! Vir! Na vir!" She didn't want to die to a shemlen, and she wasn't going to let her Halla meet that fate, either. She made as if to quickly dismount, but her arm buckled beneath her and she crashed into the ground - wounded shoulder first. The Dalish let out a pained cry as the arrow was twisted in her shoulder, curling up on the spot.

Her Halla bleated at her in concern, pacing around her before he looked back at Desten with an expression that was almost pleading. The creature knew Veris would try to fight being tended to, but even being helped by a shemlen was better than dying.

The mage dipped his head low as the halla bowed, knowing that they were more intelligent than most people realized. With that, he turned to speak to the woman just as she fell from the halla's back, and Desten sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.

His soft steps barely made any noise on the forest floor, crouching down next to the injured elf. He put a hand on her uninjured shoulder, and tried to ease her onto her back. "You need to let me take care of that arrow. You're going to cause more damage than you already have if you don't." He tried to offer her a smile, knowing that gust of venom was probably coming. "Trust me, I'll tend to it and then we can just part ways."

"Don't touch me!" Veris shouted, her good hand shooting for her hunting knife on her belt as she tried to move away. She was not going to be tended to by some shem! He would just as soon kill her as he would help her. "Trust you? After everything you shemlen have done, I'm supposed to trust you?" She snapped.

The Halla, however, seemed to lack her reservations. he stepped over her to move behind Desten, pulling the rope attached to his horns tight to prevent Veris from fleeing from the human. She shot a glare at the creature, looking for a moment like she had been betrayed. Was this his revenge for tying the rope around his horns in the first place? Surely Halla were not such cruel creatures!

Defiantly, Veris reached up and tore the arrow out of her shoulder - crying out in pain as she only caused herself more harm than good. She tossed the offending projectile aside, clutching at her wound as the bleeding begun anew. Her Halla made a sound that was somewhere between exasperation and concern. Well, he never claimed his tender was the smartest elf in the clan...

Desten sighed. "Because even though my kind attacks elves, I never have. Now come here before you bleed out, or I'll let you." He stood and waited with his arms crossed, waiting to see how much longer this nonsense would play out. He looked towards the Halla as it tried to keep the woman where it was, and simply shrugged.

The Halla bleated at Desten in response, digging his hooves into the mud to prevent Veris from pulling back on the rope. The Dalish in question made a distressed noise, glaring at Desten. She grit her teeth, before she spat at the ground.

"Fine." She growled. "Elgar'nan take you if you hurt us." She spat, but made no further effort to stop him from healing her.

Desten lets out a small sigh as he steps forward. "That's a fine way of saying thank you..." He then slowly eased the girl onto her back, before hovering his right hand over her wound. Slowly, he began to weave the flesh back together with his magic, though his eyes slowly drift up to her's, taking account of how many cuts she had. "What happened to you?"

He then tosses a look back to the Halla, to make sure that it too didn't have any wounds.

Veris just scoffed at his comment, letting him use his magic on her. She was no mage, but she had seen the Keeper do similar healing on wounded hunters. Still, she watched, eyes narrowed. She hesitated to respond to his question, but after a moment she replied. "The lands of Asha'bellanar are being invaded by monsters." She explained, glancing back in the direction of the Wilds.

The Halla had a few scrapes and cuts, but it seemed to have avoided any serious wounds. Unlike its petty tender.

Desten blinks and stops his healing for a moment, his face suddenly switching to that of extreme concern. "Wait, monsters? Do you mean darkspawn?" He picks up the arrow and looks it over for a moment, before swearing under his breath. He then gives her a sympathetic. "I'm...sorry. I know what kind of beasts they are." He then looks back to the Halla. "Are you two the last of your clan?"

Veris tilted her head at that. "Darkspawn... I feel like I should know that word." Maybe it had been in one of the hahren's stories she had half listened to. At his last question, however, she immediately sits up. "We're not!" She replied, in denial. "They were already gone... they must've gotten away without us." She hadn't found any bodies, after all.

The Halla let out a mournful cry as he folded his legs beneath him and laid down. Veris shook her head, refusing to believe that a clan as skilled as hers would have been felled by monsters in the Wilds.

"They're fine. I know they are. We'll keep moving and Ghilan'nain will guide the Halla back to his herd."

Desten slowly pushes her back down. "Relax. I wasn't done yet." He then puts his right hand on her shoulder wound again, but now uses his left to take care of some of the smaller injuries. "And I'm sure you're clan is just fine." He looks over at the Halla and smiles. "Smart creature..."

His head swiveled back towards to her though. "Wait, what's Ghilan'nain?"

Veris frowned at Desten, glaring as he pushed her back down onto her back. Somehow his words weren't comforting. She had to believe wholeheartedly that her clan was okay, but the chances were looking so slim... no, no, they had to be okay!

"She's the mother of the Halla." She replied sourly. "She speaks to the Halla, tells them where to go. Of course, a shemlen like you wouldn't know anything about that."
